Primary guidance supports an original document-checking method. Calculations are labelled illustrations, not market samples, underwriting thresholds or live offers.

Start with the rejection message and the application you sent. Put them in the same folder before trying another lender. The first task is to find out what the decision actually says, not to guess a better credit score or apply again with the same unanswered question.
You can make progress with a single page. Write the lender, product, amount, date and reference at the top. Underneath, use three headings: confirmed reason, question to ask and unknown. Keep UK and US procedures separate; this guide does not give every business applicant the same legal rights or response deadline.
Copy the stated reason without improving it
Use the wording in the decision rather than translating a short refusal into a diagnosis. If it says insufficient trading history, record that. If it gives no reason, write no reason supplied and ask what feedback is available. A marketing page about common rejection factors cannot explain your particular application.
The British Business Bank's UK guidance identifies factors such as credit history, collateral, the business plan and cash-flow forecasts as possible reasons for refusal. It recommends asking the lender for feedback. These are starting questions, not proof that any one factor caused your decision.
Ask whether a factual correction or reconsideration process is available, which documents it needs and whether a deadline applies. Save the answer. If the lender will not provide more detail, keep that limit visible rather than inventing an explanation from an online discussion.
Check one document at a time
Compare the legal entity, trading date, turnover period and requested amount with the original submission. Mark a mismatch only when you can show it. Preserve the original file, the corrected version and a short explanation of the difference. Do not quietly change a figure to make an application appear stronger.
For an invented example, a business enters annual sales of £120,000 but attaches records covering nine months. That is a period mismatch to explain. It does not establish a full year's income, and multiplying it into an optimistic forecast would not settle the question. Ask which period the lender wants and provide the supporting record.
If the decision names a credit report, identify the particular reporting organisation and file involved. A personal report, a business report and an assessment of trading receipts are not interchangeable. Check the records that were actually used. Correcting a genuine error and persuading a lender to accept a correctly understood risk are different tasks.
Test the next payment against a weaker month
On a separate sheet, list customer money expected to arrive and payments already committed. Use dates, not only monthly totals. Include payroll, tax, suppliers and existing borrowing before adding a proposed new repayment. Keep an invoice that has not been paid separate from cash already in the bank.
Here is an illustrative check, using invented amounts. A weaker month leaves £1,500 after planned operating costs and existing debt. A proposed £900 payment leaves £600 before unexpected costs. A £1,700 payment instead leaves a £200 shortfall. These are not lending thresholds; they show the question your own forecast needs to answer.
Try the same sheet with one customer paying late. Write down the gap rather than hiding it in an annual average. If reducing or staging the purchase removes the gap, that gives you a different proposal to consider. If the plan still depends on unconfirmed sales, waiting can be a useful decision.
For US SBA loans, separate the program from the lender
The SBA's 7(a) guidance requires program eligibility, creditworthiness and reasonable ability to repay. Businesses apply through lenders, and the documents required depend on the application and processing method. A government guarantee does not replace the lender's assessment.
Keep two lists: program conditions and the documents this particular lender requested. Put a question mark beside anything you cannot verify from the current official guidance or lender correspondence. Do not reuse a UK scheme checklist for a US application, or assume these conditions describe every ordinary business loan.
SBA Lender Match is an introduction tool, not a loan application. The SBA says it guarantees neither a match nor an offer. Treat any introduction as a chance to ask questions, not a decision to accept funding.
Compare another route only after defining the gap
The British Business Bank describes the UK Bank Referral Scheme and alternative financing routes after a bank refusal. Check whether the bank and circumstances are covered. A referral does not establish that another commitment is affordable.
For any alternative, request total repayment, fees, collection dates, security and any personal guarantee in writing. A smaller advertised payment may come with a longer obligation. A collection linked to receipts needs its own weak-period test. Do not assume a different product label solves the problem identified on your sheet.
Also consider collecting overdue invoices, revising supplier terms, reducing the project or using existing cash. Verify a grant's restrictions and payment timetable before counting it as available money. When existing commitments are already difficult, qualified business or debt support may be more useful than another application.
Finish with one next action
End the page with a decision: ask for a missing reason, correct a documented error, seek reconsideration, compare written terms or wait. Add the person responsible and the next date you will check. There is no universal approval score or waiting period in this exercise.
Keep that page with the original application. Before submitting again, point to the evidence that changed or the unanswered question you resolved. If neither is clear, pause the new application and ask the first lender for the specific information you still need.
From comparison to calculation
Check the terms in the offer you actually receive.
Credit Over Debt’s Offer X-Ray compares the amount financed, fees, payment schedule and modeled cost using the figures you enter.
