An AI answer can look complete while leaving the loan's actual fee or repayment date unverified. Start with the quote or agreement you already have. Put the generated answer beside it, then mark the first statement that would change your decision.

This guide helps you check that statement. It does not assess your eligibility, recommend a lender or turn a chatbot response into personal advice. You can complete the first pass on paper without uploading a document or sharing account details.

Write the decision in one sentence

Choose one question, such as whether the quoted payments fit the money you can reliably commit. Avoid asking a model to decide whether an offer is generally good. That larger question can hide several separate assumptions about cost, repayment timing, security and alternatives.

Write the decision at the top of your note. Below it, keep three columns: generated statement, document evidence and unresolved question. A useful first row might say that the answer omitted an arrangement fee. Leave the missing amount blank until you have an actual source.

Find the document behind each important claim

Ask which dated document supports the statement and open that source yourself. A link-shaped string is not enough. Check the provider, product, jurisdiction and version before treating a passage as evidence about your quote. A page about another product may be real but still answer the wrong question.

The FCA's AI good-practice publication describes observations and areas for improvement, using illustrative examples. It is context for evaluating systems, not a new universal consumer right to a particular loan decision. Its discussion of responsibility and oversight should not be replaced with a claim that an AI answer is independently approved. [C1]

Keep the distinction visible in your note. One column records what a public source says. Another records what your signed or offered terms say. The generated explanation belongs in neither column until you have matched it to evidence.

Rebuild the cash schedule with simple arithmetic

Use a small example before trusting a complicated answer. In this invented illustration, £1,000 arrives in your account, twelve payments of £95 follow, and a separate £30 fee is payable. Twelve times £95 is £1,140. Adding the fee gives £1,170 paid, £170 above the £1,000 received.

The illustration is not a lender offer, APR calculation or model of revolving credit. It assumes the fee is separate and not already included in those payments. If the actual document instead deducts a fee from the advance or includes it in the schedule, rebuild the comparison rather than count it twice.

Write each actual payment date beside the amount. A correct annual total can still conceal a shortfall before payday. Use an independent calculator or spreadsheet for arithmetic and retain the inputs. Do not accept an unexplained numerical result because the surrounding explanation sounds confident.

Keep eligibility claims out of the answer column

An explanation of a product is not an acceptance from its lender. If the output says you qualify, look for the actual offer and any remaining conditions. Put an unsupported approval statement in the unresolved column. Do not convert a market average or someone else's example into your personal probability.

The FCA's speech on AI sets out a supervisory direction, including responsible adoption. A speech is not an individual underwriting result, and it does not validate a particular public chatbot or COD tool. [C2] Your check still needs the evidence relevant to the product and decision in front of you.

Check the awkward case before taking action

Ask what happens if the payment cannot be repeated, a quoted concession ends or an important document is missing. The question is useful even when the model cannot answer it. Turn the uncertainty into a specific provider question rather than asking for a more reassuring rewrite.

For an existing debt, keep contractual payments and any proposed change separate until you have verified the actual instruction. A generated statement about a refund, complaint or regulation does not establish that money has arrived or that a payment has been cancelled.

If you need help understanding the agreement, use a verified provider contact or suitable independent support. Keep private evidence in a channel appropriate for that task. An explanation can be useful without sending an unredacted statement to a general-purpose service.

Give the unanswered question an owner

Finish by choosing one unresolved statement that matters: the fee, usable cash, payment date or condition. Save the question, the document needed to answer it and the provider contact responsible for replying. Record when you asked. A second generated answer is not a response from that contact. You do not have to settle every possible issue in one sitting.

Before acting, replace that blank with a verified answer and rerun the arithmetic if an input changes. If the missing evidence could reverse your decision, pause the new commitment. A polished paragraph cannot supply the absent term.
